Let's be honest, there's a world of difference between having to wake up early and actually enjoying it. For years, I was firmly in the "dread" camp. Picture this: the alarm blares, you hit snooze (multiple times), you drag yourself out of bed now running late and, unexcited about the day ahead and if you're lucky, you get in on some kind of breakfast. Does any of this sound familiar? All I wanted was those precious ten more minutes of "rest," which, let's face it, were anything but.
The truth? My "not a morning person" identity was a self-imposed sentence, built on a foundation of poor habits and a negative mindset.
I knew something had to change. I started restructuring my days, ditching the chaotic, overbooked schedule for a more organized approach. This meant slowing down—a concept that was foreign to me. Thanks to my amazing mentor, I began implementing morning and evening routines, being more intentional about how I eased into and out of my day. No more falling asleep with my laptop precariously balanced on my chest or launching myself out of bed like a rocket. Even on my busiest days, I found myself feeling more present, less rushed.
But the real game-changer? My mindset. I replaced the dreaded "I have to get up and do..." with a grateful "I get to do..." Complaining first thing in the morning sets the tone for the entire day. Starting with prayer and gratitude, even if it's just a quick moment, can completely shift your perspective. Instead of clinging to the "I'm not a morning person" mantra, I started affirming, "I love waking up to a new day." And you know what? It worked.
Creating Your Sanctuary: The Sleep Environment
Let's talk about sleep hygiene. Everyone has their own idea of the perfect sleep environment, but a few basics apply: a clean, comfortable bed, an appropriate room temperature, and a space free from clutter. Invest in things that promote relaxation, like live bedroom plants or an air purifier. A clean, neat space is a calm space, and that sets the stage for restful sleep.
Prep Like a Pro: The Night-Before Routine
This is where you save yourself from the morning rush. Lay out your clothes, prep your meals, set out your fitness mat—whatever helps you streamline your morning. To be blunt, skipping this step is simply irresponsible. You deserve to start your day feeling prepared and in control.
My day begins before the sun peeks through the blinds. As a mom of two very active preschoolers, prioritizing sleep is non-negotiable, so I aim for an early bedtime. With the house quiet, I take a few moments to prepare for the morning. Clothes are laid out for the little ones and myself, snacks are prepped, and the kitchen is tidied, setting the stage for a smoother start.
The soft sounds of birds chirping of alarm clock signals it's time to rise. I slip out of bed, a quiet prayer of gratitude on my lips, and head to the kitchen. A quick cup of warm water with lemon starts my internal engine, and I take a few moments for quiet reflection. Then, it's off to get the kids ready.
The sweetest part of my morning is waking my little ones. Gentle kisses on their foreheads, soft whispers of "good morning," and the sight of their sleepy smiles are the perfect way to begin the day. We have a routine: a quick bathroom trip, then back to the room to get dressed. While they're choosing their shoes and accessories (which can sometimes be a dramatic affair!), I make sure their breakfast is ready.
With the kids dressed and fed, I squeeze in a quick morning workout—even if it's just a 5-minute routine. The kids almost always join in. It's amazing how much a little movement can boost your energy. Then, it’s time for my own breakfast. I break my morning fast with fresh fruit, a smoothie, or a healthy bowl of oatmeal. This is my fuel for the busy morning ahead.
Throughout the morning, I remind myself that a positive attitude is everything. There are always moments of chaos—a spilled drink, a toy-induced meltdown—but I try to approach them with patience and grace. When I feel myself slipping into frustration or laziness, I pause and turn to prayer. I remind myself that I'm not alone and that I can lean on my faith to guide me. It's in these moments that I truly understand the power of starting the day with intention and gratitude. It's not always perfect, but it's our beautiful, messy, blessed morning, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
